Branding, bartering and Malibu

After spending the week with no computer keyboard (I cleaned it too furiously and now it doesn’t work :()I have realized it gave me much needed distance from the world of Etsy and social media to breathe and really focus on inspiration and the branding of my line golden plume in my own world.

A few things dawned on me over this technology-less week:

1. Branding is far more complex then I ever gave it credit. The real idea behind it I discovered was to make my label 100% cohesive and jive with everything golden plume. Including logos, photos and my mission statement not to mention what matters most, the jewelry.
2. Secondly I got to thinking It probably is smart to source some of the work out to other talented people. In the past I always took on more then was smart simply because I knew/thought I had the skills to do it all!
I’m realizing that that spread my talent too thin. So rather then photograph, create the logos & handle the social PR aspect of my line I have decided to delicate it out to others on a barter type arrangement. For instance I’m helping a seriously professional photographer shoot a bat mitzvah in exchange for her help and equipment for shooting my jewelry line. As for the etsy banner, logos and our main logo I’ve enlisted a group of talented art students to draw their best crack at it in exchange for credit on blogs such as this one and our website. Finally I’m helping a young up and coming fashion stylist/ pr girl with her blog in exchange for celebrity exposure and contacts in the fashion world! With all this help I feel less like a one man island and more like a thriving metropolis!

3.) Lastly I realized with all this time away from the computer I had time to work on the inner deep inspiration that helps me create Golden Plume Jewelry. Today I filled the day with a wonderful trip to Malibu, driving along the gorgeous Pacific ocean I felt a deep connection to my art and my purpose therefore enriching my brand and mission at Golden Plume.

While I enjoy my Computer connections very much it was nice to have a forced break away to get a perspective on this ride of creating Golden Plume’s look and feel. I’m anxious and excited to reveal my new branding to the world, as all the factors slide into place. For now I’ll just breathe in some more ocean air and begin creating a beautiful life, a beautiful brand, completely inspired.

And now a piece that dawned from this time of reflection:

Glorious inspiration found in Cape Cod

The stories behind the creation of a piece of jewelry can lend allure and interest to an otherwise simple piece. Recently I got the chance to shoot one of my long time friends in some very sentimental GP pieces. The feeling of having my close friend Laura (pictured above) and the pieces I created dedicated to my mother, was very touching. It made the shoot magical and I felt like the possibilities of creating this line (Golden Plume) were endless.  The necklace pictured above was created using one of  the stones my mother gave me from a special trip to Cape Cod. If you have ever been to Cape Cod then you know the beauty that lies upon their shores. The magical colors of rock lined beaches is awe-inspiring. The rocks there, come to life when wet, exhibiting bright reds and purples, blues and greens, all glistening in the sun as the waves roll over them. The amazing magic of these rocks is that they need water, it’s what makes them turn these brilliant colors. The rock used in this necklace when wet is a vibrant striking color. Amazing what a little water can do?

After the rock dried to the color pictured above, I wire wrapped it with glass and 22K coated beads and gifted my mother with this as a present for the holidays! It was a priceless gift with much meaning. I share with you the Cape Cod Necklace, a reminder that anything is possible with a little magic and great friendships.

Love Is In The Air

For those of us counting the days until grand gestures abound here are a few items I have created in honor of St. Valentine. Each year we honor the great idea of love on a day in the middle of the heart of winter! With inspiration of the ages I created the following pieces keeping in mind a feeling of rustic romance yet leaving a little Copper shine. These pieces felt like they should be worn in a candlelit barn surrounded by hay and romance. A little abstract I know, but isn’t that what love is? Hard to explain but easy to feel.

All pieces are available on my Etsy Store: Bound Together Love Tag Bracelet

Precious Stone Chunk Ring

Amazing how fun rings are to design and create! Today is the first day I posted up some of my handmade rings on Etsy. Finding the stones to use to create these rings is half the fun, seeing them come to life as a ring is the other! These stones were found in a small shop in West LA that had hundreds of stones to choose from. The flat side of the stone was screaming for ring use! When I wear these most people stare since they are so large and fun to flash around on your digits!  To View on Etsy Shop:

Precious stones in red and orange hues are carefully picked to dazzle upon your digits! Each stone is different and has its own unique character sourced here in Los Angeles. A fun way to express your inner earth child! The band is bronze and adjustable. The weight of the stone is substantial but comfortable for daily wear. Ring can be gift wrapped or shipped in our standard packaging (see photo above).

Late Night Design Flows

The last few days I dove deep into the design side of Golden Plume. Taking a step away from my computer, accounting books and other distractions, stripping away everything but jewelry supplies, tools and my hands. Romantic idea however it took about 10 hours to really get into the groove. The first day consisted of drinking coffee, staring at my collection of  beads, stones, chain etc and realizing I needed more materials to spark a creative impulse. Four bead shops and supplier warehouses later and I was finally  ready to roll. Ready to roll  and get creating at 10pm. 10 pm an hour when most were turning out the lights and getting ready for dreaming hour. I had to remind myself, a wise person once said ‘never stop when you are feeling inspired, it’s a rare and coveted gift you might not always be able to summon at a whim’. So I hunkered down and let the designs flow! Hours rolled on into the early morning as I churned out earrings, rings & pendants. It was magical, stones and wire everywhere. By 4 am I heard the footsteps of my puppy coming to check up on his person, a bit confused he gave me the “ok, I think that it is way past your bedtime” look and with that I realized I needed to shut down the creation flow for a little recharge! To my happy surprise the creative flow returned the following eve. As I slowly come down from the high of creation, I couldn’t be more happy reflecting on the wee hours of the morning with nothing but quiet and flow. Now it’s time for some much-needed sleep!

Here are a few basic photos of the items born from the “flow” (all available on Etsy later tonight):

Quite beautiful. Amazing how many treasures exist on Etsy. Creativity is fabulous and so is this necklace! Proving once again that in designing jewelry its all about the material you choose. This modern take on Wilma Rubble’s favorite necklace would surely land you a lot of glances and admiration walking around town. Go ahead support local on Etsy! This artist did good.
